Selecting "Green" Materials Is Feasible, But Not Cheap

This week, I'm continuing the saga of selecting "green" materials for the interior of Don Thomas Sporthaus on Old Woodward Avenue in Birmingham. (These materials work residentially, too.)

Our biggest challenge was the 15-foot countertop for the sales area near the entrance. It needed to be not only strong and durable, but also a showpiece.

Granite seemed an easy choice. I figured it was a natural material that was not endangered. But the owner, my son Steve, discovered that all the exotic granites came from faraway places. "Greening" Of Store's Interior Poses Challenges

When my son Steve Kopitz, owner of the long-established Don Thomas Sporthaus, decided to move the store to Old Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham, he asked me to work with him on the interior selections. I knew this would be a challenge not only because of his tight schedule, but because of his insistence everything had to be "green."
